Germany defeated the United States, 1-0, in Thursday’s highly-anticipated World Cup match in a rain-soaked Recife, Brazil.

Despite the loss, the US defied many expectations by holding its own in the so-called ‘Group of Death’ and advancing to the knockout stage due to goal differential with Portugal. It marks the first time the American team has advanced to the knockout stage in consecutive World Cups.

Germany won the group.

Thomas Mueller provided the lone scoring in the 55th minute off a shot that came following a missed opportunity in a set piece.

The US next play on Tuesday, facing off against the Group H winner, which will most likely be Belgium.
