Voters will now be able to decide on the sale of beer and wine in the city of Tyler when they vote in the general election Nov. 6.

The Tyler City Council approved the measure during their regular meeting Wednesday morning.

The Smith County Commissioners are also expected to consider the option when they meet July 31.

The item calls for a Special election for beer and wine off premises and to extend the legal sale of mixed beverages in restaurants to current city limits.

Recently a group petitioning the sale of beer and wine sales in Tyler and Smith County Precinct 2 collected more than 16,000 signatures, more than enough required to be considered to be placed on the November 6 ballot.

The issue was also met with a group opposing the measure, “Stand Strong For Tyler” challenged the verification of the signatures on the ballot.
