‘Idol’ Hopeful Phillip Phillips’ Hometown Raises Money for Family to Fly to Hollywood
According to TMZ, the 21-year-old’s family can’t afford to fly to California to be there with their talented star, so their community in Leesburg, Ga. is working to raise money for airfare. Sources say it will cost around $3,000 to fly the Phillips crew out west.
With southern hospitality in full effect, Leesburg-area residents are holding fundraisers every Wednesday in which “at least 15 merchants donate a percentage of their profits from that day” toward the travel fund. Leesburg Mayor Jim Quinn has even coined the name “Phillip Phillips’ Wednesdays,” and has given the ‘Idol’ singer’s family a key to the town.
TMZ also reports that the charitable donations have not only been from local residents. Fans from all over the country are emptying their pockets and mailing in checks, including tourists and ‘Idol’ viewers from as far as Florida.
