Just when we’ve finally gotten over the Kim Kardashian/Kris Humphries split, it looks like there’s a new national nightmare to keep us up at night — Ashton Kutcher has quit Twitter.

Deep breath. We’ll get through this together.

As you may have heard, Kutcher got into a bit of Twitter drama after posting the following Tweet in response to the Joe Paterno Penn State football scandal. Turns out Ash wasn’t too pleased with Penn State letting the longtime coach go. Check out his (now removed) Tweet in support of Paterno below.

Unsurprisingly, everyone else found Ashton’s support of Paterno in poor taste, particularly in light of his recent anti-child prostitution campaign.

The newly minted ‘Two and a Half Men’ star promptly apologized, pleading ignorance to the sex abuse scandal at Penn State that Paterno is accused of turning a blind eye to.

Realizing that he should think before he Tweets, Kutcher is taking some time to reevaluate his Twitter activity. As of 12 hours ago, Ashton posted the following on his Twitter page:

Say it ain’t so, Kutch. We’ll have more on ‘KutchGate ’11″ as it develops…

UPDATE: Ashton posted a link to a blog post titled “Twitter management” on Twitter apologizing for his statements. He writes, “A collection of over 8 million followers is not to be taken for granted.” Truer words were rarely spoken.
