We know Ben Affleck has written the script for his solo Batman movie, but the question remains, what will it be about? Will we get a story of the Dark Knight true to the comics, or something entirely new? It now looks like we’ll get a mix of both.

In an interview with Argentine publication Cines Argentinos, Affleck told a reporter that his solo Batman film would both borrow from the comics, but mainly be an original story. Here’s his full comment:

I think what I would do is, I would probably do in some ways what Zack [Snyder] did with this movie, which is to borrow certain things from great comic books but create an original story around it. Because I wouldn’t want fans to already know the story and be familiar, but I would borrow and steal great things that have been done before in the comics.

While it may be worrisome that Affleck is highlighting Zack Snyder‘s work on the troublesome Batman vs. Superman, it’s reassuring to know he’s working on the new movie with DC Comics Chief Creative Officer and co-chief of DC Films division Geoff Johns. Affleck’s agent Patrick Whitesell previously told The Hollywood Reporter that Affleck had written a “really cool” idea for the Batman film and Johns has echoed his excitement for the story. That’s still super ambiguous, but based on Affleck’s recent comments we at least know not to expect anything directly adapted from the comics.

There’s no release date for Affleck’s solo movie yet, but his Caped Crusader will make an appearance in Suicide Squad this summer, followed by Justice League, Part One on November 17, 2017.

In other DC Cinematic Universe news, Collider debuted the trailer for the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition, Snyder’s extended R-rated cut of the film. The trailer features some glimpses at the 30-minutes of new footage, including a look at Jena Malone‘s cut mystery character.
