St. Louis Baptist Church located at 4000 Frankston Highway in Tyler is the site of the city’s first shelter location.

The shelter is set to accommodate more than 150 evacuees should the need arise.

Monday, the City of Tyler made emergency preparations in the event residents of Louisiana are forced to flee to East Texas to Seek Shelter from Hurricane Isaac.

Tyler has entered a state of advanced preparedness to serve in any capacity due to Hurricane Isaac.

Tyler’s role will be to serve self-evacuees and medical special needs evacuees only. Other shelters will be added if needed.

In Longview, a team from the East Texas Chapter of the American Red Cross has assembled and will be the central location to assist refugees in finding shelter in the Tyler and Longview area.

During Hurricane Katrina seven years ago, some 30- thousand refugees took shelter in and around Dallas /Fort Worth, and Tyler and Longview.

Tyler Police Department Mourns the Loss of One of Their Own

Ocie Coffer, 45, was found deceased Saturday at his residence from natural causes.  Ocie began his employment with the City of Tyler in 1999 with the Water Utilities Department.  He came to the Police Department in 2002 as a Public Safety Officer.

A Public Safety Officer (PSO) is a non-sworn uniformed employee who assists officers and investigators. A PSO is responsible for completing minor investigations such as abandoned vehicles, parking complaints, gas drive-offs and miscellaneous lobby calls.

“Ocie was a dedicated, kind hearted and hard-working employee who always had a smile on his face.  He enjoyed serving the citizens of Tyler in their time of need and will be truly missed,” said Chief Swindle.

Ocie is survived by three children ages 23, 17 and 15.  Visitation for Ocie Coffer will be on Thursday, August 30th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Harmon Undertaking, 1112 N. Palace.  Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Friday, August 31st at Smith Temple Church of God in Christ, 2400 Walton Rd, Tyler.

Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery.
