Downtown Tyler recently received two statewide awards for Best Commercial Interior and Best Restoration in the 2016 Texas Downtown Association (TDA) President’s Awards Program.

Winners were announced during the Presidents Awards Gala, held in conjunction with the 2016 Texas Downtown Conference.

The Best Commercial Interior award recognizes outstanding interior design in a downtown building and was given to the Butler Architectural Group in the over 50,000 population category.

The People’s Petroleum Building was named winner of the Best Restoration in the over 50,000 population category. The Best Restoration award recognizes outstanding restoration of a historic property.

Another Downtown Tyler project, the Downtown Tyler Film Festival, reached finalist status in the Best Promotional Event category. This annual event is coordinated through Main Street, the City of Tyler Communications Department and board of community volunteers.

“These awards recognize the top-flight design efforts by Butler Architectural Group and the owners of the People’s Petroleum Building,” said Beverly Abell of the City of Tyler Main Street Department. “To consider that these nominees were in competition with nominees from Texas communities with populations of 50,000 and up is an indication of just how tough the competition is and how much our Tyler projects had to shine when being judged,” Abell concluded.

Since 1988, the awards program has recognized more than 150 projects, events and people that make a difference in Texas downtowns. Each of the categories has two separate population divisions – under and over 50,000 residents. Downtown Tyler has received 24 awards since the beginning of the program.

The Texas Downtown Association, established in 1985, is an independent, statewide nonprofit organization comprised of over 400 members involved in downtown and commercial district revitalization projects. TDA provides resources to members through networking opportunities, marketing, education and advocacy to achieve community goals. To learn more, please visit www.texasdowntown.org.
