East Texas Could Receive 1" - 3" Of Snow With Winter Storm

A snow event like the one predicted to move through Monday night into Tuesday morning hasn't happened in the piney woods in quite a while.

A Winter Storm Watch has been replaced by a Winter Storm Warning that remains in effect until 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 16th. The counties under this warning include:

Anderson County
Camp County
Cass County
Cherokee County
Franklin County
Gregg County
Harrison County
Henderson County
Hopkins County
Kaufman County
Marion County
Morris County
Panola County
Rains County
Rusk County
Smith County
Titus County
Upshur County
Van Zandt County
Wood County

Delta County and Hunt County are under Winter Weather Advisories at this time. The front will bring with it some strong winds, rain, a period of freezing rain and sleet changing over to snow. Snow accumulation with this storm is possible with most of the area seeing anywhere from one to three inches of snow, with pockets of four to five inches in some areas, especially near the Texas-Louisiana border. The accumulated snow will hang around for a while because the area isn't expected to be above freezing until sometime on Wednesday.

The First Alert Weather Center at KLTV 7 has declared Monday and Tuesday to be First Alert Weather Days because of the impending storm. As of now, the timing goes a little like this:

Monday evening the cold front will approach East Texas, there will be a cold rain associated with the front that may produce a rain/freezing rain/sleet mixture, but will soon transition into a snow only event.

Tuesday morning snow will continue with heavy bands at times with accumulations happening throughout the area. Snowfall should continue through late morning with temperatures staying below freezing.

Temperatures will rise above freezing on Wednesday to allow for some melting and thawing out, but when the sun goes down so will the temperature! Back down well below freezing and what water there is on roadways will definitely freeze. With this major weather event predicted to hit East Texas, you'll need to be prepared in all kinds of ways, from food, alternate power source, to winter weather driving. Plan ahead and be prepared. Use caution when traveling the roads once the rain and snow begins to fall.
