BEAUMONT – One person is dead and three wounded after a gunman opened fire in front of a Southeast Texas Courthouse, according to Associated Press reports.

Police in Beaumont say the man suspected in today’s shootings near the Jefferson County Courthouse has been injured and captured.

Officer Doug Kibodeaux (KIB’-uh-doh) declined to identify the suspect. Kibodeaux says the suspect was going to court with his family Wednesday morning when he opened fire and shot several rounds. Kibodeaux did not immediately say whether any of the victims were related to the suspect.

The courthouse was locked down.

Burglary Suspect Shot by Alert Neighbor Arrested

LONGVIEW – Police say Brian Andrew Davis, 18, of Longview was taken into custody on four warrants following his release from the hospital. Three of the warrants were related to a burglary that occurred on March 10, 2012 in the 100 Block of Delmar Street.

Longview police said officers responded to a call on Delmar Street after a neighbor heard noise coming from a house next door. The neighbor went to investigate and found the door kicked in and two burglars inside the house. One of the suspects had a gun, and he and the neighbor exchanged shots. Davis was shot in the ankle, he was transported to the hospital with non -life threating injuries, the second fled and is being sought by Police.

East Texas Inmate Barred From Muslim Services Loses Lawsuit

HOUSTON — A Texas prison inmate serving a life sentence in a Gregg County aggravated robbery case has lost a federal court appeal of his lawsuit contending he unconstitutionally was barred from Muslim religious services for six months as discipline for causing a prison ruckus.

Jesse James Copeland, 56, also argued in the suit rejected by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that Christian symbols were improper in the chapel at an East Texas prison where the Muslim services were held.

Copeland filed suit after he was disciplined for not leaving a Muslim religious meeting when ordered to do so. The ensuing disturbance in July 2006 required response from about 30 corrections officers at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Eastham Unit.

Missing Soldier’s Remains Found in North Texas

PETROLIA — The human remains found in rural North Texas last month have been identified as those of a missing soldier. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says the remains of Jose Ramirez were found south of Petrolia, near the Texas-Oklahoma border.

Sheriff Kenny Lemons says Ramirez likely died sometime in summer 2007.

 

Officials Look to Revamp Texas Ranching

LUBBOCK — Texas agriculture officials say they will travel the state in the months ahead to help ranchers who want to rebuild their herds after heavy selloffs last year.

They’re also hoping to encourage young people to get into ranching after many cattle producers got out of the business because of the historic drought.

 

Baylor to Use Massive Donation for Football Stadium

WACO — The family of the former owner of the Houston Astros is giving Baylor University the largest capital gift in school history.

The undisclosed sum from Drayton McLane Jr.’s family will be used to help build a new football stadium. School officials say the gift topped a $20 million donation it received in 1998.
