Tyler Independent School District officials are urging parents to carefully check their children’s belongings before sending them to school. The advisory comes after a student brought an unloaded gun onto the Orr Elementary School campus in Tyler on Monday.

Administrators found and confiscated the weapon and they say the students were never in any danger.

“We have staff and procedures in place to ensure our campuses are safe learning environments for our students,” Ken Vaughn, Tyler ISD Director of Student Services, said in a news release. “We also need support from our parents and guardians to help us control what students bring to school.”

The investigation into this incident is ongoing and appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken concerning the student involved.
