Until recently, once the Thanksgiving meal was over it was time to relax. It was the biggest turkey day of the year and one of the biggest football days of the year. For the remainder of the evening, families slept off some of the carbs, played with the kids in the yard and circled sale items in newspaper ads. Black Friday shopping was coming up, but the stores were closed.

The last several years major retailers started opening early, offering Black Friday sales that started Thursday. Local vendors had to do the same or chance missing out on revenue. Critics said it was a greedy, thoughtless thing to do. Family members who worked in retail no longer had the day off. Serious shoppers rushed through the meal to get to the deal.

Some retailers took notice and refused to take part. A 2015 T.J. Maxx commercial features cozy family scenes with pie and firelight and announces they're closed on Thanksgiving, "because family time comes first."

Not all families think early shopping is a bad thing. Family members and friends often shop Black Friday sales together and comment it has become part of their Thanksgiving Day tradition. Whether you're for or against Black Friday shopping on Thursday, what some call shopping on "Black Friday Eve," these are the stores that won't be open Thanksgiving 2018.
