A lot happened in Game of Thrones Season 7; enough that you’d almost forget Ed Sheeran crooned his way through the premiere alongside Arya Stark. Irritated fans didn’t get their wish to place Sheeran among Drogon’s later victims, but the singer himself doubts the character made it to Season 8.

Catch up by now if you’ve not watched Season 7, but we never did see what became of the “Shape of You” singer’s unnamed Lannister soldier after Arya joined their campfire singalong. “The Spoils of War” director Matt Shakman had good reason to doubt Sheeran’s character was among those roasted in the “Loot Train Battle,” but Sheeran himself tells MTV the character couldn’t be long for this world regardless:

We were all quite young, those soldiers. I doubt I’m going to survive for that long, to be honest, when there are dragons in the world … No one wants to see me come back. I wanted to be a cameo in it, and I’ve done the cameo. I’m cool with it, though.

Backlash to Sheeran’s brief appearance was strikingly intense, though not quite so much to drive the singer off social media, as was initially claimed. Either way, Sheeran is but one in a long line of musical cameos, none of which generally get the chance to return, or see their characters through to the bitter end.

Game of Thrones Season 8 production is gearing up this fall, likely including one last round of musician cameos, but are we satisfied with Sheeran’s fate?
