This is pretty messed up. A Georgia restaurant is coming under some serious criticism for naming a ‘Black and Bleu’ sandwich after Chris Brown‘s infamous 2009 assault on Rihanna.

The New York Daily News reports that the Chops & Hops Steakhouse in Watkinsville, Ga. has a history of naming food after celebs, but this is crossing the line — and their patrons let them know it. When the restaurant posted a photo of the sandwich on Facebook with the caption, “@chrisbrown, @rihanna and us teamed up for a (sic) award winning celebrity sandwich. Put your hands on this caribbean black and bleu sandwich,” they received backlash almost immediately.

One angry customer posted, “What a thoughtless thing to write. Think about all of the battered women trapped in abusive relationships.”

Another wrote, “Never, never will we cross the threshhold [sic] of your restaurant. You’ve really blown it with this ad. Domestic violence is not a joking matter and never should be made to appear so. Mark us down as 2 lost customers.”

One customer had a suggestion for the restaurant, who pulled the sandwich from its menu. “Honestly the sandwich looks good and ‘Black and Blue’ is a great name for it,’ one woman wrote on Saturday. “However if you plan on bringing it back I might suggest you name it after an MMA fighter, or hockey player… anything except a woman who was beaten.” Not a bad idea, right?

Upon learning of the uproar, Chops & Hops’ owners quickly sprang to backpedal. Taking to Facebook, reps for the restaurant posted, “The owners of C&H would like to make sure everyone knows that we and our staff DO NOT SUPPORT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. Many of us have been affected by domestic violence in some manner and realize that this is no joke.”

The restaurant also plans to donate six times the proceeds from the sandwich to local domestic violence support groups. We think that’s a step in the right direction. Here’s hoping they know better next time!
