The story of Harry Potter left the literary and cinema worlds spellbound, and it's now inches away from taking over theater, too.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a two-part production which opens on Saturday (July 30) at London's West End Palace Theater, picks up just about 20 years after the end of the origin book series' final work, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The story finds Harry sending his son, Albus Severus Potter, off to Hogwarts for the first time, and the play's early reviews seem to indicate Albus' adventures will leave audiences equally enchanted — possibly more so.

Daily Telegraph critic

Chris Jones of The Chicago Tribune offered a similarly rave review, calling The Cursed Child "spectacular" and noting "I walked out of the theater quietly lamenting that the movies ever were made." Variety writer Matt Trueman noted simply "It’s total theater. And, yep, it’s magic."

Still, if there's a complaint, it's the length of the show — both parts combined clock in at more than five hours. While Daily Mail writer Quentin Letts gave the production four out of five stars, he noted "as the hours passed and the cloaked figures crouched with much penumbral melodrama, there were moments I could have done with a glug of gurdyroot infusion to keep me alert."
