Is Katy Perry’s ‘Part of Me’ Video Marine Propaganda?

Katy Perry joins the Marines following a bitter breakup in her ‘Part of Me’ video. While on the surface it just seems like a cool concept, critics are asking if Perry’s motives run deeper: Is this propaganda to join the Marines? And if so, was she paid for it?

AOL Music reports that feminist author Naomi Wolf questioned Perry’s motivation and inspiration behind the clip. “Have you all seen the Katy Perry Marines video?” Wolf wrote on her Facebook page. “It is a total piece of propaganda for the Marines … I really want to find out if she was paid by them for making it … it is truly shameful. I would suggest a boycott of this singer whom I really liked — if you are as offended at this glorification of violence as I am.”

Perry has spoken out about her love for Marines post-’Part of Me’ filming. “I used only Marines, no actors or actresses,” said of her video. “It was me and the Marines. For three days, I was a wannabe Marine. It is so difficult. Can I tell you how much more respect I have for people in the service?”

Perry hasn’t said whether or not she was compensated for her work with the military, but she did say that it was planned for a while to use them in her video. “It’s an affirmation of strength, so I wanted to go the strongest route that I possibly could with the video,” Perry said. “I wanted to join the service, use the actual base.”

Wolf continued, “As an artist if she took money from the US military to promote their agenda, she should disclose that fact.”

Perry has yet to respond to Wolf’s allegations, but this will be quite an interesting battle to watch. From the sound of her training, it sounds like Perry may be ready for it!
