The status of Liam Hemsworth's 10-month engagement to Miley Cyrus has certainly been up for debate lately. First there were all those rumors he'd hooked up with January Jones. Then Miley was spotted without her engagement ring (several times). Then January refused to comment when asked about said alleged hookup.

And now? Liam's on an entirely different continent.

"Liam did fly home [to Australia on March 1] so they could have a break," a source told PEOPLE. Seems he's doing a little soul-searching with the help of his brother Chris, with whom he's very close, and hasn't yet set a return date.

But the insider added all those whispers about Liam and January are overblown, saying, "[They] used to go clubbing together in L.A. They have been friends for a while."

As for Miley's MIA ring?

She was "upset and angry about the cheating rumors" so "she took the ring off to make him mad," the insider said. "[But] it doesn't mean that they have split. Miley says they are still together."

Infidelity worries aside, there are other issues between the couple.

"Miley is crazy about Liam, but sometimes doesn't treat him great," said the source. "She likes things her way and tends to play games. Liam is also a strong person and that's why they often butt heads."

"They have a very strong physical attraction, but have very different personalities and backgrounds. This makes their relationship very complicated."

Miley, meanwhile, has stuck to her promise of not talking about her personal life on Twitter, but she did recently change the background on her page to an image that reads, "An army of lovers cannot lose."
