Lorde Talks Fashion, Songwriting and Being a Role Model in Vogue

In the March 2014 issue of Vogue, 17-year-old Lorde sat down with the fashion giant and dished about her personal style, her songwriting process and how it feels to be seen as a role model.

The ‘Royals’ singer, who is known for her unruly, dark curls and signature crimson lipstick, certainly has a unique fashion sense. But the four-time Grammy Award winner is smart about her style decisions — and she picks what makes her feel empowered.

“The kind of clothes that I’ve found I like to wear over the past year and six months have all been things that make me feel powerful and strong,” she told the magazine. “I wear a lot of pants. I wear a lot of long, structured dresses.”

The songwriting prodigy, whose mom is a well-known New Zealand poet, also revealed how her background in writing has not only brought her enjoyment, but has made her the successful artist that she is today.

“I’ve never written poetry, but I’ve written short fiction for a long time, and that’s the thing that I read, pretty much exclusively,” she explained to Vogue. “It’s much more similar to songwriting for me — having to make something big and get it into a small space.”

Lorde may not necessarily think that she is a poet, but we’re pretty sure anyone who is a fan of her lyrics would disagree.

“Now when I have an idea and I write it,” she said, “it comes out in the form of a song.”

It is this relatable songwriting — in addition to ‘Royals,’ many of Lorde’s songs are soulful tunes about growing up as an average teen — something that many young girls can relate to. However, this “relatability” is somewhat of a blessing and a curse for the young singer, who would never want to be seen as a soapbox preacher.

“It’s a fine line between being a role model and preaching to people. I never want to tell anyone how they should be, especially not someone my age,” Lorde explained. “But, that being said, I’m conscious of the fact that people my age are reading what I say and listening to what I say, and that’s cool — particularly for the girls who are into what I do.”
