The U.S. Mail processing plant located at East Texas Center, just north of Tyler, will soon be shutting down and moving operations to Shreveport, La., Austin and Coppell, according to a release from the U.S. Postal Service.

The move comes as a result of a five-month study of postal processing plants across the country.

The Postal Service is making the changes to reduce operating costs by $20 billion by 2015 and return the organization to profitability.

Since 2006, First-Class Mail volume has rapidly declined, leaving a mail mix that generates far less revenue than it costs to sustain postal operations. The dramatic decline in mail volume has resulted in an enormous amount of excess capacity within the network, creating significant opportunity for consolidation.

A specific date for the move has not been made.
