Mix 93-1 Half Price Books Teacher Of The Week October 2nd

Mix 93-1 and Half Price Books are proud to recognize outstanding teachers from our East Texas classrooms!

This week's recipient is Major Shawn Owens the JROTC instructor at Gilmer High School.

Major Owens was nominated by a parent of one of his students who had this to say,

Major Owens is a great person. He cares about his kids and will go to bat for them. My daughter has Asperger's syndrome. He has helped show her she belongs some where. She has really never belonged in a program. He takes in kids with disabilities and gives them a uniform and takes them with him places when no one else would. He loves to see them smile. They March with him and go to functions with him. My daughter is 16 years old and he helped me find her voice. To some this is not important but to mom's with kids like mine it's everything. He teaches firm but with a kind heart. My daughter comes home daily just talking all about his class. I have 2 kids in his program and I think they are better girls because of his class. My 15 year old wants nothing else but to join the Air Force and Major is helping make her dreams come true. He deserves this because he truly knows how to reach kids and has a heart when he does. When he sees an accomplishment he is just as happy as the parent or kid. Anyone who does not care how different kids are is a winner in my book. He deserves to know who special he really is.
