Mix 93-1 and Half Price Books are proud to recognize outstanding teachers from our East Texas classrooms!

This week's recipient is Coach J.J. Fernandez, a math teacher at Longview High School.

Coach Fernandez was nominated by a former student and wrote this about 'Coach',

Coach Fernandez is not just an ordinary math teacher for me and everybody, Coach is a friend, a brother, a father and not only to his family but to his former students and current students. He has done so much for his kids and the community. What I love about coach is he loves what he does. He does not hesitate once, NOT ONCE! He will go out of his way and do everything and anything to see somebody become successful.. not just in education but life.. REAL LIFE! Math has never been my best/favorite subject. I always struggled with it. In highschool I was put in Coach's class.. having to take 2 classes in one day was so ugly for me. I was always mad lol. But at the end of the day Coach always put up with my long faces and I knew I wasn't going to stop being in his class until he knew I was ready. He put all his time and effort and I know for a fact he's still doing the same with his kids now! Trust me! Ask about him! Coach has become a legend. He's been around for so long and theirs so many stories about him. People talk about him like he's family, which he is.. they appreciate him and all the hardwork that he has done in furthering education and life. For me, he is somebody amazing.. him and his family! I have to give a shout out to his wife Tracey Fernandez, she is a teacher as well. They both have done the most making sure their kids are active in school and outside of it. Thanks to them I have a place I can call home. In the situation I was in I was not financially stable. I was struggling trying to get back on my feet. And this was just last year in December. Single mom, barely working, barely having a babysitter.. you get the point, right? I did not have sufficient funds for an apartment I was trying to get. I only had enough for the deposit for the electricity to be under my name. I still needed more for the deposit for the apartment. To keep it short, for me not to go into detail and get emotional.. Coach and his family blessed me on Christmas with a home. Who does that???! I remember saying, I'm not going to cry, I'm not going to cry. They did it from their hearts and I'm doing this nomination from mine. I honestly couldn't figure out what to do or say to thank them until Mix 93.1 came up with the teacher of the week. I said to myself.. what the heck?! Might as well give it a try. My home is the greatest gift my son and I got on Christmas! Coach Fernandez, Tracey, and the rest of the gang are my family! I know they will always be there. Doesn't matter how many years go by. I never had a way to thank him/them. Not just for what they've done for me but for the former and current students. This is our THANK YOU!! Coach and Tracey are not just going to be teachers of the week but teachers of the year! Forever and ever! Thank you for the love and support you give to the world.. In education and in the real world. Love you guys!!
