A mother in Florida was arrested and now faces charges of child neglect after she let her 7-year-old son walk to a nearby park by himself.

Nicole Gainey was arrested by Port St. Lucie, Fla., police last Saturday after she gave her 7-year-old son, Dominic, permission to walk to a nearby park.

Gainey said the park was about a half-mile from her house, about a 10- to 15-minute walk for Dominic. On the way to the park Dominic passed a public pool, where someone asked him where his parents were.

“They asked me a couple questions and I got scared so I ran off to the park and they called the cops,” Dominic told Fox6Now.com.

Police arrived at the park where Dominic was playing and took him home before arresting his mother.

"I honestly didn't think I was doing anything wrong," Gainey said. She told FOX her own bail bondsman, whom she paid nearly $4,000 to get out of jail, said to her that his parents would have been arrested every day.

"[The police officer] just basically kept going over that there’s pedophiles and this and that and basically the park wasn’t safe and he shouldn’t be there alone,” Gainey said.

Gainey said her son always has a cell phone with him and she calls to check on him periodically.

The state attorney's office told the TV station there is no law that specifically states how old a child can be to be left unsupervised.

What do you think? If this were myself and my parents, they would have been arrested all the time because of how often I went somewhere in my hometown by myself, often not coming home until dinner or even after dark.

But, many say the world is different these days. But is it really? Let us know.
