My Life as a Zucchini, the French-Swiss stop-motion film about a boy who goes to live at an orphanage that’s been nominated for a Best Animated Feature Oscar this year, is coming to U.S. theaters with our own English-language dub. The trailer for the new version features the voice talents of Will Forte, Ellen Page, Nick Offerman, and Amy Sedaris, and today the film has just released a new clip showing us how young Zucchini, as he prefers to be called, ended up at the orphanage in the first place.

As far as social worker characters go, Offerman’s Raymond seems a lot more sympathetic and kindly than most. He listens to Zucchini as the boy tells him about his mom who liked beer and his dad who liked chicks – so much that he painted one, the bird kind, on his kite. The rest of the film deals with the young boy coming to terms with his new life and his mother’s untimely death, as well as some budding feelings for a fellow girl he meets at the orphanage.

Foreign animated films are often featured at the Oscars, and provide a welcome respite for those of us who are already saturated with Disney and Pixar. My Life as a Zucchini is up against Kubo and the Two Strings, Zootopia, Moana, and The Red Turtle at the Oscars this year, and is out in select theaters February 24.
