Recommendations regarding children's car seats have been the same for years...until now. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has announced that the guidelines for keeping children in car or booster seats have been extended.

According to this announcement by AAP, children should remain in rear-facing seats until they are 2 years old or have reached the recommended height and weight for their seat. Until now, the suggested age for a front-facing car seat was 1 year or 20 pounds.

Booster seat recommendations have changed too. It is now suggested that children remain in booster seats until they are 8-12 years old and 4' 9".

These are changes are designed to keep children safer during car travel because regulation seat belts are designed for average adults, not children.
