One Direction Admit Similar Clash Riff Used for ‘Live While We’re Young’ Was ‘On Purpose’

One Direction have been accused of ripping off a riff from the Clash in their 'Live While We're Young' song, and now the 'X Factor' alums are admitting it was "on purpose."

The guys recently released the lead single from their sophomore album, 'Take Me Home,' which sparked angry comments from Clash fans claiming it bit off the rockers' classic tune 'Should I Stay or Should I Go.' However, Harry Styles says the nod was completely intentional.

He tells the Associated Press, "It's a bit like the first single ('What Makes You Beautiful') where the opening riff sounds similar to a certain film ('Summer Nights' from 'Grease'). It's kind of on purpose though, it's a great riff."

The video for 'Live While We’re Young' has leaked, but will see an official release in the U.K. on Sept. 30. Meanwhile, One Direction is already queuing up their next single, which could be a track penned by British sensation Ed Sheeran.

Despite the bit of controversy, the band says their new album is pretty straightforward. "There aren't too many surprises," Styles added. "We're just really happy with how the album's come out. We all agree that it's better than the first one ... we're proud of it." ‘Take Me Home’ will be released on Nov. 13.
