One Direction Competing With … One Direction?

One Direction seem to be splitting the charts in two directions. The U.K. heartthrobs have been charting consistently since their infectious debut, ‘Up All Night,’ hit retailers in March, and now they’re competing with another One Direction.

Confused? Apparently so are a lot of record buyers.

Billboard reports that the ‘X Factor U.K.’ alumni are currently at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, moving 66,000 copies last week, but another One Direction are making their way up the Heat Seekers chart at No. 48 with their album ‘The Light,’ selling 6,000 total cumulative copies.

Turns out, it’s the same California-based One Direction that are suing Simon Cowell and SyCo Records over the ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ singers’ band name. “We may not have Simon Cowell’s machine behind us, but we have many loyal fans,” the U.S. version of One Direction told Billboard. “We thank them for supporting our albums, and we intend to stand up for the right to Rock and Roll!”

The American One Direction formed way back in 2009 — a full year before the U.K. 1D even met — filed a trademark on the band name before their British counterparts did. However, in a recent interview Harry Styles and Zayn Malik said, “We’re not changing our name.”

We have a feeling the American One Direction may come around … Perhaps after this free P.R. and maybe a hefty settlement to tide them over.
