Thousands gathered at Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday (June 6th) to honor the 50th anniversary of Robert F. Kennedy’s death at the hands of Sirhan Sirhan during his 1968 presidential campaign.

In an ABC News report, Speakers remembered the fallen politician by reading excerpts from his speeches, including civil rights leader Rep. John Lewis, who read from Kennedy’s speech after Martin Luther King Jr. assignation, and Parkland school shooting survivor and activist Emma Gonzalez, who read a speech Kennedy gave in apartheid South Africa.

Former President Bill Clinton gave the keynote address, speaking about how he pushed America to unite for a greater purpose.  Also, his daughter Kerry Kennedy remembered her father on Twitter with a moving tribute.

I miss my father every day, but I am strengthened to know the causes he believed in are still championed by brave activists today. His legacy and work are timeless.

Other family members included at the ceremony were his widow Ethel Kennedy, and grandson Rep. Joe Kennedy III.

Robert F. Kennedy is buried in Arlington near his brother, former President John F. Kennedy.
