For the first time, moviegoers are getting a glimpse at the upcoming Planet of the Apes reboot starring James Franco. But forget Franco, and forget rubber masks. For Rise of the Planet of the Apes, special effects shop Weta Digital has created computer-generated apes by using next-generation motion-capture technology based on what the company used to breathe life into Na'vi aliens from Avatar and Gollum from The Lord of the Rings films.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes sets up the ape domination of human society that Charlton Heston suffered in the 1968 original Planet of the Apes. This time around, Franco plays a scientist who pioneers a brain-enhancing wonderdrug. Of course, it doesn't take long for his primate test subjects to get the better of their human counterparts. Rise of the Planet of the Apes opens August 5th.
