Hey Girl: Ryan Gosling has literally never said "Hey girl" and has no idea where the meme-sensation came from.

Gosling, who stars in the forthcoming La La Land with Emma Stone, told Variety in a new interview that he's totally blown away by the internet trend, in which fans plaster sexy affirmations designed for women over images of Gosling's face.

"I've never said that," Gosling said.

And that is the sound of many hearts breaking...

More generally, Gosling said he's confused about why the internet's so fascinated by him, and has managed to dig up old videos of his singing and dancing at different children's talent shows.

"It’s a big surprise when they show up on the web,” he said. “I’m confused — by how confident I was. That level of confidence was unearned."

"Do you remember when Fabio got hit in the face with a pigeon on the roller coaster and it broke his nose?" he continued. "Sometimes I feel like I’m the pigeon and the internet is Fabio’s face. Actually, I don’t know if I’m the pigeon or I’m Fabio’s face. Depends on the day, I guess.”

Confused, too, is Stone, who has managed to navigate the celebrity world without so much as a Twitter account.

“I don’t even understand,” she said. “I mean, you’re great but why have you become this — why?"

Hey girl: why?
