Star Wars Rebels has gifted us similarly high-profile big bads each year, from beating Rogue One to James Earl Jones’ Darth Vader return, to this year’s reemergence of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Don’t expect Vader to have any significant role going forward, however, as Rebels boss Dave Filoni says there’s been “an elected decision to not have Vader around.”

There are a lot of Darth Vaders. In video games and cartoons and ancillary appearances, many men have filled his armor and respirator. But if you’re making a Star Wars movie, then there’s only one true voice of Vader: James Earl Jones.
With Rogue One: A Star Wars Story set betwixt the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, and with a story that involves the band of Rebels who stole the plans for the original Death Star (the same plans that Princess Leia gave to R2-D2, sparking the plot of the original Star Wars), it would only make sense that the Empire’s villain supreme, Darth Vader, would be involved somehow. I mean, he has to be right? What is he, asleep at the wheel of the TIE fighter? C’mon.
'Star Wars Rebels' officially premiered its "Spark of Rebellion" last week to great fanfare, with the series proper to continue on Disney XD this Monday, but already the animated prequel series is making a major link to the 'Star Wars' movies.
