Forest Service Says Be Careful With New Year's Eve Fireworks

Got your fireworks yet? There are just two opportunities each year to buy fireworks in Texas – near the 4th of July, and new New Year’s Eve. Business is good right now at local fireworks stands with the holiday fast approaching. Our own Leslie Reynolds offered tips on where to get the fireworks in a recent blog.

Even though there has been some recent moisture, it’s been another dry year and we shouldn't let the recent rain and snow give us a false sense of security, according to Texas A&M Forest Service officials. Fireworks and piles of dry leaves don’t mix.

It's an interesting dilemma for parents today. Kids love watching fireworks, but the public displays can't start until it gets dark, and that means we have to wait 9:30 or 10:00 to catch a glimpse of the fireworks, and by the time we get the kids home to bed it's 11:00 or later. That's LATE if you have kids under five years old. And then Thursday is a big ole mess with those little biological clocks thrown off and grouchiness galore. What to do, what to do.

Wanna enact our plan? We're having a wild and crazy 4th of July party at home today. It keeps the kids excited and entertained, it involves legal fireworks, and you can have the young 'uns asleep by 9:00 or 9:30. See how elaborate it gets.

The 4th of July is coming up Wednesday and firework stands have opened up all around East Texas. In my neighborhood alone, there are four stands selling the them and I'm sure I'll be stopping by one of them soon to buy some because my daughter has asked when we're buying fireworks! She began asking the day she saw those portable stands show up on the roadside.

Fireworks Are Fun, Unless You're a Dog

As we mentioned, the fireworks stands have opened up shop in Texas, and you can buy the fireworks through next Wednesday at midnight.

Fun for all! Except the family dog.

Dogs think they're being tortured! Mine run to take cover in the bedroom every time they hear a pop. If we can't find our two miniature schnauzers shaking under the bed, we can usually find them with the jitters billowing under the low rack of clothes in the master closet. The muffled pop may be coming from a mile away outside, but the dogs start whining and yelping like the firecrackers are being shot off from the kitchen sink. Noise is noise, and they don't know how far away it originates. They just think they're being shot at.

This time last year we were feeling the heat here in East Texas with 100-plus degree days. Add to that about 95 percent of the state of Texas was under a burn ban and that put a damper on Fourth of July celebrations. What a difference a year makes! It's a bit wetter although just as humid, but we're able to shoot our fireworks this year (so far at least)!
