Tyler,TX - Construction of the first phase of the Smith County jail expansion is now underway. A groundbreaking ceremony Thursday signaled the first leg of the 35 million dollar project approved by voters last year.
The expansion includes re-location of the kitchen and laundry facilities and will include a video visitation station that will improve security and safety at the low risk facility. Construction of the downtown section will start later this year.

Smith County Authorities are warning the public of a possible phone scam. The caller is asking citizens for donations to fund a Blue Santa Program. The caller is soliciting the funds on behalf of the Smith County Sheriff’s Department, Peace officers Association, and the Department of Public Safety. The law enforcement agencies do not solicit donations by phone and residents should always use caution when receiving solicitation calls for donations from any organization over the phone.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms continue to move across East Texas today. Some of the storms have produced marble to quarter size hail. The National Weather Service says an additional two to four inches of rain is expected in the area today.
Flash flooding is also a major concern and motorist are urged to use caution when approaching flood prone roadways.
A lawyer for Ginger White, the woman who said she had a lengthy affair with Herman Cain, says he's trying to obtain additional cell phone records. Cain's own attorney, Lin Wood, is requesting those records and other documents so that Cain and his team can examine them. Cain has said he will decide in the next 'few days" whether to abandon his White House bid -- but not before he meets with his wife.
Evangelist Billy Graham remains hospitalized this morning after undergoing treatment of his lungs. A spokesman says Rev. Graham was admitted to Mission Hospital in Ashville, North Carolina after complaining of a cough and congestion. The 93 year old Graham was hospitalized earlier this month with pneumonia.

In the past year or so, several airlines have made headlines for insisting obese passengers buy two seats to accommodate their size and avoid infringing on the space occupied by others. Some people say the practice is unfair, but Arthur Berkowitz likely isn’t one of them.
On a recent US Airlines flight from Anchorage to Philadelphia, he was forced to stand for the entire seven-hour trip when he was seated next to a man who took up not only his own seat, but half of Berkowitz’s as well. The flight was completely full, meaning there was nowhere left to go.
In Auckland, New Zealand, a helicopter became entangled in wires and crashed while installing a Christmas tree on the local waterfront. That’s a sure-fire way to dampen your holiday spirit.
