Weekend Box Office: 'Fast Five' Cruises to Record-Breaking Opening

'Fast Five' kicked into high gear at the weekend box office.

The action-packed sequel, the fifth in the 'Fast and the Furious' franchise, took in a whopping $83.6 million, setting a record for the best April opening ever. (April's previous owner was fittingly 2009's 'Fast and Furious, with $71 million.)

'Fast Five's' impressive debut was more than enough to dethrone last weekend's box office champ, 'Rio,' which this week earned a steady $14.4 million, putting it past the $100 million mark.

The first thing I heard this morning when coming into the station was "Man, they crashed a lot of Chargers in that movie!" That comment came from our production director Chris Dyer. He took his son to see the Fast Five over the weekend and said it was great but hopes that all the crashes were computer generated and not real because if it was real, " man they wasted a lot of Chargers!" Chris and his son helped push Fast Five to the #1 spot at the movies this past weekend. The rest of the top 5 after the jump.

'Rio' Repeats at Weekend Box Office

It was another high-flying weekend at the box office for 'Rio.'

The kids' animated movie, featuring the voices of Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg, took the number one spot for the second weekend in a row, earning an impressive $28.6 million on over 3,800 screens. Since its release last weekend, the movie has grossed $81.3 million and counting.

Once again, an animated movie found itself ruling the weekend box office.

In this case, it was 'Rio.' The high-flying kids' movie, which features the voice talent of Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg and more, pulled in an estimated $40 million, making it the year's best opening thus far.

Coming in at a distant second was the much-anticipated 'Scream 4,' which opened with an underwhelming $19.3 million. That number is especially disappointing, considering 'Scream 3' grossed $34.7 million in its opening weekend 11 years ago.

An Animated Film And Horror Film Are New At The Theaters

This weekend Hollywood is giving us something for the entire family - for the little ones there's an animated movie called Rio which follows the adventures of a bird named Blu, who's on the run from some kidnappers during a trip to Rio de Janeiro. Then for the adults there's Scream 4. This is the first Scream show in 11 years and is on the 15th anniversary of the first murders in Woodsboro. Catch the previews after the jump.
