Texas State Rep Urges People to Stop Using Chilean Flag Emoji as Substitute for Texas Flag

Fellow Texans. I really don’t want to have to ask this, but do most of you know what the Texas flag looks like? Most likely, people just think “close enough” and use it in text messages anyway.

But for some, it’s an insult to use another country’s flag to represent the state of Texas. In House Concurrent Resolution 75, Republican State Rep. Tom Oliverson of Cypress, TX is “urging Texans not to use the flag emoji of the Republic of Chile when referring to the Texas flag.”

He is not dismissing the pride the Chilean flag represents for its country, but he believes the flag does not represent what the Texas flag represents – which is technically true. In his statement he wrote:

The colors of the Chilean flag depict sky, snow, and blood spilled while fighting for freedom, but the blue, white, and red of the Lone Star Flag stand for the Texan values of loyalty, purity, and bravery.

He continued:

Just as our flag could never fully embody the country of Chile, neither can the Chilean flag inspire feelings of pride and passion in the heart of a true Texan.

The problem is that iOS does not provide a Texas flag emoji or any built-in Texas-themed emojis, according to the Chron. However, for $1.99 you can purchase TexMoji for your phone.

Personally, I just run with the happy face in the cowboy hat and call it a day.

His final thought in the resolution:

That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby reject the notion that the Chilean flag, although it is a nice flag, can in any way compare to or be substituted for the official state flag of Texas and urge all Texans not to use the Republic of Chile flag emoji in digital forums when referring to the Lone Star Flag of the great State of Texas.

I don’t know. Part of me doesn’t think this warrants a discussion in politics, but another understands what kind of emotions and pride are derived from your flag. So.. how about you emoji wizards just make a Texas flag emoji? After all, we were once a country.
