Most students right now are thinking about Christmas break, but one Tyler school is thinking about its new classes, and an upcoming expansion.

The Tyler charter school, Cumberland Academy currently serves K-6th grade students, and just announced plans to open a middle school in fall 2013.

The expansion will be gradual. The school says in a news release, it will add seventh grade for the 2013-14 school year and eighth grade for the 2014-15 school year. They'll start construction on the new campus in February.

The existing elementary school is at 1340 Shiloh Road, and the new middle school will go up nearby, close to the intersection of Shiloh and Copeland roads.

Usually students have to go through the application and acceptance process, but current fifth- and sixth-graders at the school can be automatically accepted for sixth and seventh grades in the fall of 2013.

The charter school puts quite a bit of emphasis on the use of technology in the classroom and fine and performing arts, and the new middle school will be no exception.

Registration starts in January, at cumberlandacademy.com, and the school is also looking for qualified teachers and administrators too. Just send those resumes to ncotton@cumberlandacademy.com.
