Will Smith doesn't have the greatest track record when it comes to robots.

After battling an AI uprising in 2004 action flick I, Robot, the actor tried his hand at a little digital dating with Sophia the Robot, an android developed by Hong Kong's Hanson Robotics and activated on April 19, 2015. Smith explained on Instagram that she's capable of showing over 60 different human expressions — many of which she made use of when banishing him to the friendzone in a YouTube video uploaded to Smith's channel.

In the clip, things are awkward from the outset. After Smith's robot joke falls flat, Sophia lets him know his music isn't "for her," and that she's very aware of his history with her peers.

"They show us I, Robot just to make sure we don't get any ideas," she explains.

Later, Smith tries to go in for a kiss, only to receive a prompt rejection.

"I think we can be friends. Let's hang out and get to know each other for a little while," Sophia says. "You're on my friends list now."

The date, of course, was all in good fun, though Smith did have a little feedback for the Hanson team. "She wouldn't kiss me, so there's probably some development flaws that they need to work on," he quips at the end.
