You wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of someone attempting to open your front door. Your family is sound asleep and someone is breaking in. You reach into the top drawer next to your bed and grab the gun. But this is no ordinary gun.

Instead of bullets, this gun shoots pepper spray pellets that detonate upon impact. Any intruder in your path is likely to be writhing in pain before they can ever reach for their own weapon to retaliate. And the best part? While your would-be invader doubles over for a good 20 minutes or so, you didn't kill him or her. You just put them in a corner until the cops arrive.

You don't even need to have the best aim. Firing this pistol allows for a margin of error that even novice shooters can master. The egg-like pellets release a spray that can impact up to five feet.

That's the proposal of a new start-up called Salt Supply Co. and CEO Adam Kennedy says the SALT Gun is based on a similar weapon used by the military and police to restrain violent suspects without causing lasting harm.

Adam has one at his home.

"We keep it in our nightstand because it's not deadly, you don't have to lock it up," he says. "You should feel comfortable having this by your bed, because your kid can't kill himself with this."

The handgun sells for $300 and is powered by CO2 cartridges and holds seven .70-caliber slugs. The pepper spray in the pellets causes the lungs to constrict rendering the victim incapacitated.

SALT is not considered a "gun" by ATF since the definition of such is a device designed "to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive." So, a background check is not needed to purchase the weapon.

The start-up launched an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign on Wednesday  (10/28/15) to raise funds to bring the gun to market. They are hoping to raise $75,000 and Kennedy says he has a factory in Indiana ready to start production.

Overall, the goal for the company is create a personal protection product that even those anti-gun will feel comfortable having in their home.

At time of writing, however, the Indiegogo campaign has been removed as have been videos of the weapon in action. No word regarding whether or not they met their goal.
