See Shia LaBeouf as the Tennis Pro in New ‘Borg Vs. McEnroe’ Trailer
Today is the start of Wimbledon 2017 and the 140th anniversary of the world’s oldest tennis tournament. If you can’t actually make it to London to celebrate, you can watch a quick 30 seconds of Shia LaBeouf playing tennis.
The Nymphomaniac actor portrays tennis champ John McEnroe in the upcoming Swedish production Borg vs. McEnroe. The film from Janus Metz (True Detective Season 2) details the intense rivalry between McEnroe and Björn Borg (Sverrir Gudnason) that spanned the 1970s and ‘80s. The drama focuses on their Wimbledon tournament in 1980 where McEnroe was booed when he entered the court and Borg was fighting for his fifth consecutive Wimbledon title. Check out the full synopsis:
Award-winning Danish director Janus Metz brings to the screen the story of one of the world’s greatest icons Björn Borg and his biggest rival, the young and talented John McEnroe – and their legendary duel during the 1980 Wimbledon tournament.
The first trailer we got of the film was an international teaser with less emphasis on LaBeouf and more of a focus on his Swedish co-star. The new trailer, debuted by Empire, is more traditionally dramatic, setting up the rivalry with on-screen text and a dramatic score. But we do get to see some more of LaBeouf this time. Borg vs. McEnroe opens in the U.K. in September, but still doesn’t have a U.S. release date. Keep an eye on the fall festival circuit for this one.
