Star gazers can catch another meteor shower soon. The Leonids meteor shower peaks the night of November 17.

This meteor shower has actually been active pretty much all month long, and will be active through November 30, but it peaks the night of November 17. If conditions are ideal, we could see up to 15 meteors per hour. However we’re dealing with a moon that will be 76 percent full.

If you’re wanting to catch some meteors, head out the night of November 17th and look up in the night sky, looking for the constellation Leo. It’s best to get as far away from city lights as possible. Astronomers recommend to lay flat on the ground and look up for around an hour. Don’t expect to look outside for a couple of minutes and see some meteors.

This meteor shower is the result of earth passing through the path of comet Tempel-Tuttle. This is why some years are a lot better than others with this meteor shower. Years in which the earth passes close to the comet, we see a lot more meteors. However years in which we pass through the path and the comet itself is far away, not so much. The next time we get closer to the comet for a better show is the year 2031.

Again, the moon may put a damper on things. It rises just after 10 p.m. in the night sky, then won’t set until just after noon the next day. So it looks like the most ideal time will be after sunset and before 10:00 p.m. on the 17.
