Authorities in East Texas are investigating a case in which a Lufkin woman is accused of trying to drown her 6-year-old daughter after she crashed her car and then jumped a guard rail into a creek.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says 37-year old Shari Kamie Brandon is hospitalized and has been charged with attempted capital murder. It’s unclear if Brandon is hospitalized for injuries from the accident or being held for a mental evaluation.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by KTRE, the little girl recounted the details of how her mother tried to drown her in a creek after the accident.

She told authorities after several attempts by her mother holding her head down under water, she played dead, and her mother left the scene.

The young girl also told investigators that her mother killed two kittens the day before the accident because they scratched the young girl and said her mother was quoting passages from the bible in attempt to “rid the devil”.

The wreck occurred in Nacogdoches County.

The Texas Rangers and Child Protective Services are also involved in the investigation.
