6 Texas Children Hospitalized After Suspected Drunk Hit-and-Run

Six children were hospitalized, two of them seriously injured, after a hit-and-run incident with a suspected drunk driver in Dallas last Saturday night around 10 pm.

A woman was driving a 2016 GMC Acadia on the 4200 block of Rugged Dr with 7 passengers including a 26-year-old female in the passenger seat, a 17-year-old boy, a 4-month-old girl, a 6-year-old boy, a 3-year-old boy, and a 4-year-old boy, when a black 2018 Chevy Malibu struck it at a high rate of speed. One child was not secured in their safety seat and was ejected from the vehicle.

The suspected drunk driver has been identified as 20-year-old Jose Castro who fled on foot with a female passenger but was later found in a nearby neighborhood. He was taken to the hospital for treatment and is facing charges of intoxication assault and collision causing serious bodily injury.

In Texas, alcohol-fueled crashes injured 14,157 people in 2022 and things aren't getting any better. More drivers got behind the wheel legally drunk in 2023 than the previous year. More people are choosing to chance it and drive than ever before.

If you are ever in a situation where you've had too many drinks, please, do the right thing and call for a ride. Even if you're underage, or afraid you may get into trouble, just make a phone call and do the right thing. You'd rather be in a little trouble with your folks than a ton of trouble with the law.
