R.E.M. has announced today that they are calling it quits. After a 30 plus year career, the band made the announcement on their website today. Read a quote from the band after the jump.

The band statement reads:

To our fans and friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.

R.E.M. formed way back in 1980 in Athens, Georgia.  Their debut album Murmer was released in 1983.  Since then, the band has released 15 albums.  Their last album, Clollapse Into Now, was released back in March.

Here is the video for one of my favorite R.E.M. songs, It's The End Of The World As We Know It.

And another one of my favorites, Orange Crush.
