It’s a weird week for Game of Thrones fans and the creators of HBO’s signature series for most of the last decade. Just hours after news broke that GoT’s creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, were dropping out of their Star Wars film to work on other projects, Deadline reports that the first prequel series that was intended to replace the show on HBO is now dead.

According to their sources...

Showrunner [Jane] Goldman has been emailing the cast and crew of the project to tell them that the pilot is dead, we hear. The development has not been confirmed by HBO. The prequel, created by the Kingsman scribe and George R. R. Martin, takes places thousands of years before the wars, romances and dragons of the Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington-led GoT that wrapped up its blockbuster eight season run earlier this year. Weaving in issues of race, power, intrigue and White Walkers, the Goldman-run prequel was given the green light back in June of 2018.

This Game of Thrones prequel series starred Naomi Watts, and also featured a cast including Naomi Ackie, Toby Regbo, and Miranda Richardson. Deadline claims the end of this pilot comes after “a lengthy post-production and rumors about issues during filming in Northern Ireland.”

HBO had commissioned numerous writing teams to work on potential Game of Thrones prequels that could replace the series after its recently-concluded eighth season, and chose this one by Goodman as the first out of the gate. They also have a rumored second pilot in development for a different GoT prequel set in a different time period entirely, one about 300 years before the events of the original show. This one is being worked on by franchise author George R.R. Martin and writer Ryan Condal. Perhaps that one will make it to the airwaves.
