Well, one of the last hold outs in the wireless industry has finally given in. Verizon Wireless announced that they will begin charging existing customers to upgrade their phones.

This will apply to customers buying new hardware along with a two-year contract. The $30 fee goes in to effect April 22.

In their defense, Verizon’s charge will be cheaper than competitors Sprint and AT&T, which already charge their customers $36 for upgrades.

I’m a current Verizon customer myself and luckily I’m due for an upgrade now. I’ll be doing that before the April 22 fees go into effect!
