The were more hits than misses at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards, so in order to keep things manageable, we narrowed it down to the five absolute best and most beautiful gowns (but do feel free to check out all our red carpet coverage).

But before we go there, it's worth a mention that bright, bold shades were favored by the celebs and starlets, as were mermaid and fishtail hems. Sweetheart necklines were also popular, as was the color red. Three ingenues wore the shade, with two of them blowing us away with their scarlet gowns.

Anne Hathaway:

After a series of red carpet fumbles while promoting 'Les Miserables,' the pixie-cute actress nailed it in her crystal-encrusted column gown by Chanel. Her short hair was polished and without a single strand out of place, while her swan-like neck enraptures us very time. It was simple, unfettered and unfussy. We're glad we didn't have to pick on her tonight.

Taylor Swift:

The much-maligned and nursing-a-broken-heart singer followed up her smashing snow white Ralph Lauren gown from the People's Choice Awards last week with a satin, eggplant-colored Donna Karan gown. Her signature ringlets were swept off her face in an updo, allowing the boxy top of the dress to assert itself. We also love the mermaid shape. Swift is frumpy no more with her recent red carpet waltzes.

Jennifer Lawrence:

J. Law bounced back from her sloppy, baggy PCAs frock with this ruby red belted Dior number. From the side, the bodice exhibited a toughness, but other than that, she stunned and was femme without being frilly. The dress also took care to show off her miniscule waistline. Those drop earrings, the bronzy makeup and the updo completed this winning look.

Julianne Hough:

The singer/actress/dancer was gorgeous in an ultra-glam, white Monique Lhullier gown with a fluffy train and golden grommets sprinkled across the bodice. She paired the fancy schmancy dress with a bit of a punk rock hairdo, and the mixing and matching of the two different styles worked for her. Her dress was one of the biggest head-turners of the evening.

Claire Danes:

The new mom was fit and in shape in this red-hot Versace dress with a halter neckline. It was glamorous without being too ballroom or too overdone. She paired it with loose strands and smoky eye makeup. She was utterly beautiful tonight and a red hot mama indeed.
