Last summer, reports circulated claiming Cara Delevingne was leaving the world of modeling behind her to focus on her blossoming film career. And after nabbing roles in big-screen flicks like Pan, Paper Towns, and Suicide Squad, it seemed pretty legit. But the British model wants you to know that she didn’t quit her modeling career, something that she now reveals was “an escape” she used to distract herself from her battle with depression.

In a series of tweets posted March 31, Delevingne set the record straight, declaring, “I never said I was quitting modeling.” The model-actress further explained how she has been struggling with depression and “self hatred,” admitting, “I am so lucky for the work I get to do but I used to work to try and escape and just ended up completely exhausting myself.”

The tweets clarifying her status as a professional model are likely in response to confusion and mild backlash the 23-year-old received this week after suddenly appearing in Saint Laurent’s latest couture fashion campaign, the imagery for which was released on March 30. Because, you know, it’s unthinkable for a famous person to simply take a break from their career for a bit.

Thankfully, the starlet is in a more positive headspace these days. Delevingne added in an another tweet that as of right now, she’s just trying to learn to love herself unconditionally: “I am focusing on filming and trying to learn how to not pick apart my every flaw. I am really good at that.”

It’s a heartbreaking confession from a girl who seems so on top of the world — from fashion to film and beyond, Delevingne is idolized by many for her effortless It Girl appeal. Her tweets remind us that we never truly know what someone’s going through behind the scenes, no matter how well they may look in photos, as well as yet another wake-up call that celebrities are human beings, just like the rest of us.
