It seems to be getting hotter and hotter here in East Texas! Temperatures have been topping out near or above the triple digits for the past couple of weeks and the humidity is getting to be nearly unbearable.

The National Weather Service office out of Shreveport has placed a good chunk of East Texas under a Heat Advisory for today that will be in effect until 7 p.m. tonight.

The affected counties are:

  • Franklin
  • Titus
  • Camp
  • Cass
  • Wood
  • Upshur
  • Marion
  • Smith
  • Harrison
  • Cherokee
  • Morris
  • Gregg
  • Rusk
  • Panola

This advisory means that the heat index values in these areas could range from 105 to 110 degrees because of the high temperatures and humidity. This could be a potentially dangerous situation where heat illnesses could arise.

To combat the effects of heat illnesses you should drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air conditioned environment and stay out of the sun. It would also be a good thing to check on elderly neighbors or relatives.

There could be a little relief on the way from the heat and humidity thanks to a weak cool front that will move in Friday and Saturday. However, meteorologists are expecting it to be short lived with even more heat on the way for Sunday and next week.
