Is Scarlett Johansson Right? Is Fashion the Obama Campaign’s Biggest Asset?
It’s no secret that President Obama has lots of friends in high places (who else could get Johnny Depp to show up at a Halloween party?), and now it seems he has a few more… from the fashion industry.
On Tuesday night, actress Scarlett Johansson and Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour co-hosted the launch party of Runway to Win, a collaborative effort by American designers to support the President’s reelection bid.
The group’s website offers t-shirts, tote bags and other items created by haute couture notables like Vera Wang and Marc Jacobs, with the proceeds going into Obama’s campaign coffers.
Johansson involved because she liked the idea of “conscious consumerism” and feels “any way to reintroduce that kind of cool factor [to Obama’s reelection campaign] is very valuable.” Since the industry already has a spotlight, she feels being able to use it for a cause like this is “incredible.”
The connection between fashion and the Obamas isn’t far-fetched. The couple is long-renowned for their sense of style. “They both have a casual cool about them,” added Johansson, who’s often acclaimed herself for what she wears on the red carpet.
But while she’s a fan of the current occupant of the White House, she’s quick to point out that she doesn’t ask other people to vote for him — she just asks them to vote. “You have to voice your opinion,” she explained.
