‘Paranormal Activity 3,’ the third installment in the horror film franchise, received a warm welcome at the box office this weekend, earning $54 million and a spot at the top of the charts in its first week of release.
In a move sure to get a few yells of “yippee-ki-yay!” from Bruce Willis fans, the fifth installment of the star’s popular ‘Die Hard’ franchise has a name and a release date — it’ll be called ‘A Good Day to Die Hard’ and hit theaters on Valentine’s Day of 2013.
The four movies opening this weekend in wide release have a little something for everyone.
‘Abduction‘ finds ‘Twilight’ hottie Taylor Lautner in mortal danger after realizing that his entire childhood has been built on a vast conspiracy of lies.
“Shut up” isn’t just the favorite comment of elementary school kids. The phrase also has a proud movie history, which has been documented by the same folks who put together the 50 trippiest drug hallucination moments in film.
Three very different films will bow this weekend in theaters nationwide.
The sci-fi/fantasy thriller ‘Apollo 18‘ uses a faux-documentary style to explore a covert trip to the moon that reveals disturbing new life forms, while Helen Mirren’s ‘The Debt‘ sees three former Mossad agents haunted by a dangerous secret mission from 30 years prior, and horror-flick ‘Shark Night 3D‘ features seven vacationers — most of whom will presumably become food — encountering shark-infested waters.

May 2, 2011 The first thing I heard this morning when coming into the station was "Man, they crashed a lot of Chargers in that movie!" That comment came from our production director Chris Dyer. He took his son to see the Fast Five over the weekend and said it was great but hopes that all the crashes were computer generated and not real because if it was real, " man they wasted a lot of Chargers!" April 18, 2011 Once again, an animated movie found itself ruling the weekend box office.
In this case, it was 'Rio.' The high-flying kids' movie, which features the voice talent of Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg and more, pulled in an estimated $40 million, making it the year's best opening thus far.
Coming in at a distant second was the much-anticipated 'Scream 4,' which opened with an underwhelming $19.3 million. That number is especially disappointing, considering 'Scream 3' grossed $34.7 million in its opening weekend 11 years ago.
