Bowl season is in full swing. Here’s a look back at what went down in the first week of games.

With the holidays comes the second week of the bowl season. This coming week features a lot of intriguing matchups, with Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III in action, along with several big name teams who struggled through disappointing seasons. H
The college bowl season kicks off Saturday night and, while the next week of action doesn’t feature the biggest or most well-known bowl games, it does highlight some up and coming teams. Florida International and Temple are among them, as well as more prominent football powers TCU and Boise State. Here is what to look for this week as the bowl games get underway.
It’s pretty well accepted that the BCS system to determine college football’s national championship is unpopular with the public.
But a new survey from Poll Position shows just how hated the BCS -- which uses a mix of human polls, computer rankings and strength of schedule to determine a one-off national championship game — really is.
LSU is in the national championship game, and Oklahoma State certainly made a strong case that they should be there as well. Now its up to the poll voters and the BCS computers to decide whether the Cowboys will get a shot at former coach Les Miles, or if the Tigers will indeed have a rematch with Alabama.
Elsewhere, Montee Ball and Robert Griffin III continued their late-season pushes for the Heisman. And the crazy season of upsets continued with Houston’s undefeated season coming to a halt and Clemson putting an emphatic end to Virginia Tech’s long-shot national title hopes. The Southeastern Conference will take home its sixth consecutive national championship next month, as Louisiana State and Alabama will play a rematch in the BCS National Championship game. Despite a last-minute push by Oklahoma State in a 44-10 drubbing of then-#10 Oklahoma, Alabama edged out the Cowboys in the final BCS standings for the #2 spot and a shot at the national title. They will take on #1 LSU, which pounded #14 Georgia, 42-10, in the SEC title game to remain undefeated.
LSU defeated Alabama 9-6 in overtime in their regular season matchup on November 5th. While surveys show most people outside of Louisiana and Alabama do not want to see a rematch in the national championship game, the poll voters and computers gave the slight edge to the Crimson Tide, giving Alabama another shot.

Hordes of football enthusiasts took the title of crazed fans to a new level on Saturday. After #3 ranked Oklahoma State took care of #10 Oklahoma 44-10, thousands of fans rushed the field, tearing down goalposts, and leaving 13 people injured, including two in critical condition.

With the season winding down, things are really starting to get tight for a lot of teams. LSU and Oklahoma State control their own destinies in the national title hunt, but there is still a lot of movement that could occur if one of those two loses. Several teams are still trying to lock up spots in their respective conference championship games while others are just trying to improve their bowl resumes.
We’ve had plenty of upsets in college football this year, and this week has all the signs of some more coming soon. Nine ranked teams, including five of the top 10, are going on the road against teams with .500 or better records and three ranked teams are in action Thursday or Friday night to whet your appetite for another big weekend of college football.
