In the case of a fire in your home, you'll want to be protected by a working smoke alarm. These little devices hanging on the wall go about protecting us very quietly, but the moment it detects smoke, its alarm goes off and your instantly aware there's a problem with smoke in your home and you should evacuate. Without that protection, sometimes it is too late to escape your home from smoke and fire. The Tyler Fire Department along with Tyler area Rotary Clubs have joined forces and are installing these life saving devices in resident's home for free.

A friend of mine and co-worker here at the radio station lost his life to smoke and a fire in his home this past Christmas. So, it is very important to have these life savers installed in your home and if you can get it done for free, you need to be proactive and have it done. The Tyler Fire Department and Tyler Rotary Clubs began signing up Tyler residents last March in the first phase of the program and installed many smoke alarms.

Phase 2 of the program begins in October and residents who meet the following criteria are urged to call and schedule an installation time. Residents that meet the following can receive a new smoke alarm:

Live in the City of Tyler
and
Own and occupy their home

To have your name added to the list please call the Tyler Fire Marshall's Office at 903.535.0007.

If you already have working smoke alarms in your home remember, the time to change those batteries are coming up! When you change your clock back in a few weeks remember to put a fresh set of batteries in your smoke alarms.
